Life, the Universe, and Everything

(or, what’s Kevin done in the month-plus since his last blog?)

With apologies to the blogmistress (whom, I will note cattily, does not have a blog of her own), it has been a heckuva long time since my last entry. No huge reason; I just never really got around to it. Here’s what’s been happening, in the order that I think to type ‘em in:

Amber’s Fourth

Amber turned four a week ago. We had cake at the shop after we all gave her presents; I ended up getting her a replacement stick-horsey, a ViewMaster, and a cool electronic book-reader-thing called a LeapPad, the cost of which I split with Troll.

I’m so happy that I’ve had the privilege of watching Amber grow up:

  • She was the first baby I ever held, and I didn’t even do that the first time I met her (I was scared I’d make a mistake and, well, break her).
  • When I was visting Jason and Kris before I moved here, in the May after the Long Winter, when my life was carpeted in wall-to-wall misery, Amber gave me (still mostly a stranger at this point) a HUGE hug. It was a moment of pure joy and hope.
  • I’ve gotten to watch her entire speech-acquisition process - including her insistence (not that I mind in the least) on calling me “Batman.”
  • I’ve watched her sense of humor develop, too. Granted, sometimes things that are funny to a 4-year-old aren’t that funny to the rest of us (like a sneak attack punch to the gut), but these things take time.

That I have gotten to watch her grow has softened somewhat the pain of not having children of my own. I’ve always looked forward to being a parent, and thought, Once Upon a Time, that it would’ve happened by this stage in my life. If it never does happen, at least I’ve seen some of that with Amber.

Dad’s Visit

My Dad stopped by Monday night, on his way from New Mexico to Orange County to help my sister move to (drum roll please, Maestro)….

Albuquerque.

Riiiiight……

A Filming Fool

Was “out in the field” a lot during the month of October filming footage for a major report/presentation that BorderLink had to give to the feds. Man, did that feel good: being out and about doing, creating, instead of being chained to my demi-cubicle.

To be continued…

Well, I’ve run out of time… I’ll have to continue this tomorrow. :-)
