One of the neater things to come out of Google’s acquistion of the DejaNews USENET archives is this list of USENET highlights, including the first mention of Star Wars Episode 6, the first thread about AIDS, and CERN’s announcement of the World Wide Web project.

They even have a record of the first big-time spam on USENET, by the “infamous ‘green card lawyers’” (AKA “those fucking idiots who sounded the death knell for USENET’s usefulness).

Lots of really neat things from a time eons ago in “internet time.” Check it out!

Zork 404

Thursday, December 6th, 2001

I like this one: Somebody has programmed their website so that, when you get a 404 (”File Not Found”) error, you get to play that classic text adventure, Zork!

Beware the grues, though! They’re nasty buggers!

Happy, happy…

Now this is cool:

After years of being demonized by most of science fiction fandom, it appears that Wil Wheaton may be getting some long-overdue respect.

Indeed, the Wesley/Wil haters (who often didn’t bother making the subtle — if crucial — distinction between actor and role) were right there at the first SF convention I ever attended, LosCon, back in 1987, interrupting a panel discussion I was observing with chants of “KILL WESLEY CRUSHER! KILL WESLEY CRUSHER!”

(Other really cool, fanboy-worthy stuff from that con: On that panel was J. Michael Straczynski with tales of The New Twilight Zone and Captain Power in those pre-Babylon 5 days. Also, I got Ray Bradbury’s autograph!)

There’s even long been a USENET newsgroup called alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die.

But now people are starting to come around.

Wil’s coded his own website. He posts on Slashdot from time to time. Even Wired ran Star Trek: Nemesis, which he describes as “the best since The Wrath of Khan.”

Congrats, Wil! Welcome back. :-)

Bam! Now we’re cookin’! I guar-awn-tee!

Thursday, December 6th, 2001

So the whole cooking thing’s been going pretty well; I can make my way through the kitchen without flinching now. (I am still a bit of a slow cooker, though.)

But I need recipes that you like and enjoy making. I don’t need cookbooks (have enough of those right now!) — just share your fave culinary delights!

Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Okay, so I feel a tad weird about doing so, but based on requests from my site visitors (100% of them demanded it), I’ve added a link to “what’s on [my] wishlist” in the navigate section to the left. Right now, it only has my wishlist from Amazon, but it’ll suffice.
