Scottish Pagans on verge of official recognition

Interesting article:

“Scotland’s Pagan community is set to gain official status as a recognised religion after raising funds for a recount of the 2001 Scottish census.” [more]

The Friday Five

The Friday FiveCaptain, we’re getting some strange readings: http://www.fridayfive.org/

1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
The one that I can remember asking my parents to read to me ad nauseum was Pecos Bill. I also really liked The Boy from Outer Space and its sequel. I also really dug comic books, even back then.

2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children?
When my folks moved a few years back, they gave me a ten-volume set of kids’ stories, poems, etc. I remember flipping through them when I was a wee lad, and want to pass the books - which date back to the 1920’s - on to my children someday.

3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
The comic that I always got was Superman Family, a series that had usually three or four stories with Superman, Supergirl, their supporting casts, or their Earth-2 counterparts.

I picked up some back issues some time ago, and discovered two things:

a. The books look horribly, horribly dated: They’re awash in 70s fashions.
b. The stories are still fun to read. Sure, they were short, and Jimmy Olsen wasn’t as cool as he was made out to be, but they loved up to my fond memories.

4. How old were you when you first learned to read?
I don’t know. Three or four. I could read before I entered kindergarten.

5. Do you remember the first ‘grown-up’ book you read? How old were you?
Not specifically. I remember that when my family lived in Ohio - I was about 8 at the time - the local library had a really cool summer reading program/contest for kids. My mom insisted that my sister and I keep reading the sort of books we’d been reading and not some abbreviated children’s books.

Very smart move on my mom’s part.

But wait… there’s more!
