The Friday Five, Unplugged

Today’s questions not taken from www.fridayfive.org/

What’s the strangest thing that has ever happened to you? (from Noelle)
The scene: Out with friends at Disneyland, circa 1989. I’m with a subset of the friends waiting outside the Disneyland Hotel for the rest of the group to rejoin us.

These three really tough guys, who bear more than a passing resemblance to gang members, notice us sitting there and stalk toward us. The leader opens his mouth and out pop five very incongruous words:

“Do you believe in Jesus?”

What follows is 30-45 minutes of them proselytizing to/at us while we squirmed uncomfortably and tried in vain to end the conversation. When it finally did, they pressed a Bible into our hands and left.

The entire encounter was so odd, I saved the Bible; I’m pretty sure I still have it somewhere with the one my grandparents gave me when I was eight.

What’s the strangest thing you have ever done to someone? (Noelle)
This one’s not so funny “ha-ha” as funny “holy fucking shit.”

Growing up, my sister was always able to push my buttons, and as we got into our teenage years that really didn’t change.

This one time, she was baiting me, badly, and I was reacting to it badly. I got so fed up with it that when she retreated to the sanctuary of her room, I broke down her bedroom door.

That’s right: I broke down my sister’s door. To call it far from my shining moment is to minimize just how horrifically out of control I was at that moment. It still haunts me to this day.

My parents, needless to say, were pissed. In addition to the huge-ass grounding I got, I had to buy and paint and install a replacement door.

What is your favorite prime number? Why? (Scott)
Thirteen. It’s funky, it’s feared, and it’s not all “Ooh! Look at me! I’m the only even prime!” like that stuck-up Two.

What is your favorite shape? Why? (Scott)
A Möebius Strip. One side, one edge. A nice and fun little mindfuck.
