Spam is a stupid proposition. Here these people are sending "advertisements" to people who are not interested in it. Unfortunately, it's free (relatively) to send email, so there's no problem in sending out the same advertisement to 5 million addresses and seeing what bites. Untargeted marketing is evil -- it's too bad there aren't things like printing costs and soforth associated with sending out emails to make it prohibitevely expensive.
