She dropped photocopied leaflets that began “Goodbye cruel world” and ended “Mary Jesus” onto the street-level spectators seven stories below minutes before she leapt.

A great, communal inhalation overtook the crowd. It was followed by the crash and tinkle of splintering glass, and by a horrifying, sick thud.

That’s how we knew she had jumped.

It took a minute or so for police and fire/rescue teams to cover up the body that had been a person.
