Episode III quick thoughts
Revenge of the Sith was quite a good movie, though I haven’t figured out if that’s based on its own merits or merely in comparison to the crapfests known as The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
After Episode II came out, I was one among many who wondered how Lucas was going to get us from the burgeoning clone army to the rise of the Empire in two hours. Here’s how he did it: He cheated — RotS runs almost two-and-a-half hours. Pacing’s pretty good, considering.
Performance-wise, the movie belongs to Ewan McGregor. Hayden Christensen’s got some nice moments playing Anakin, plus some cringe-inducing ones, too. My feelings on Palpatine/Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) bounced back and forth between delight at the return (emergence) of the Emperor and wondering just how over the top he could take things.
And I’m not sure how he did it, but ol’ George managed to pull a totally limp and listless performance from my sweet Natalie. Curse you, Lucas!
More later, including the details of my evening’s theater-going experience (the movie started with a cheer and ended with a melee).
Aren’t there some plot flaws as big as a truck in E3. For example, why can Mace go mano-a-mano with Sidious and (almost) defeat him but Yoda cannot. (One explanation was that Sidious was playing rope-a-dope to engage Anakin and really could have easily wasted Mace.)
Why did Kenobi allow Vader to live after he had him delimbed and barbequed? Why not finish him off, or if that would be too un-Jedi like, why not take him prisoner. E3 should be retitled, Obi-Wan is a Moron.
Why would Padame lose the will to live? Hello, she just had twins.
If you were a Sith lord and suspected that Padame did give birth (not being fooled by the preggers funeral scene), would not Anakin’s home planet be the first place you would look for the young Skywalker. Not to mention that Ben Kenobi is camped down the road, serving as a beacon to the Sith lords.
Are we to believe that the root of Anakin’s conversion was that he believed a dream might come true?
Anakin may have been the “chosen-one” due to his high “with the force” reading, but he was a really bad Jedi. Why didn’t the Jedi master’s notice this?
Ok, I’ll stop.

so, i finally got around to seeing the movie. usually i sit back and pick movies to death. i was way too entertained to do that this time. all plot flaws aside, this is science FICTION after all, i thought it was a great movie. i hope george will branch out a little from the saga timeline and give us a few more movies.
